It is a traveling experience that tells extraordinary stories of courage, innovation, leadership, and  service through one of America’s most recognizable cultural icons—the G.I. Joe action figure. 

Curated by Bryant K. Smith, the museum features one of the nation’s most distinctive collections  of African American G.I. Joe action figures, memorabilia, and historical artifacts. Together, these  pieces tell a broader story about American military service, the evolution of representation, and  the individuals whose courage helped shape our nation’s history. 

At the heart of the collection is an often-overlooked chapter in American innovation: during a  period of profound social change, the creators and manufacturers of G.I. Joe made the  groundbreaking decision to introduce the first positive depiction of an African American male as  an equal American hero in one of the world’s most iconic toy lines. That decision became more  than a product innovation—it became a reflection of America’s continuing journey toward  recognizing excellence, leadership, and service wherever they are found.
